YSK that if your vehicle gets impounded/towed in the US, (for any reason, be it lack of insurance or forgotten ticket), after 30 days they can auction off your vehicle with no notification.
Why YSK, They will tell you $20 or so dollars a day to get it out, but what they don’t tell you is that after 30 days they can place a lien on your vehicle and auction it off to pay off that $1000 that you owe. I accidentally found this out recently and almost had my life completely ruined. I’m just hoping somebody else’s life won’t be ruined. Edit: as a lawyer pointed out in the comments, this may not be true in all states. This was in Florida. I’m not a lawyer.
The time a US Army MP gave me a ticket...off base...in a foreign country
It was a Saturday morning and my family and I live near a military base and we were taking off a little weekend vacation. Now this was in Korea...and well like most places US MPs have zero authority off base. So I do an illegal U-Turn and all of a sudden I see what is a MP turn their lights on. We where in between bases and I do know if MPs/First Responders from the base are responding to an issue at another base they do turn on their lights off base to get to the other base faster and that's something that I've seen be pretty common practice (I think we have an agreement that allows us to do that) Never the less then MP begins coming after me...now I have to stress a MP vehicle and a Korean cop car LOOK VERY DIFFERENT so I knew it was a MP not a Korean cop...so I kept driving. This apparently made little Mr. MP man very, very upset. After about 5 or 6 KMs he decided to throw on his sirens. My wife was begging me to pull over, personally had she not been nagging me...I'd have simply kept driving my entire 195km planned trip and let that MP follow me all across Korea. So I pulled over, the MP gets out, comes up to my window and goes "What the fuck do you think your doing?" to whcih I respond "What the fuck do you think your doing?" Shocked the MP goes "What do you mean? I'm pulling you over!" "We are off base" the MP responds "You did an illegal u-turn" to which I say "We are off base" the MP said "I'm inches away from arresting you" to which I said "I wish you would!" to which the MP says "I could arrest you" to which I said "You'd lose your career over it, and you know it" "But you ran from the cops!" to which I said "Your a US military MP in FUCKING KOREA AND WE ARE OFF BASE!" to which the MP again said "You did an illegal u-turn" to which I said "It doesn't matter" The MP is like "License, registration and insurance" and I said "No" shocked the MP goes "What?" I go "no" to which the MP goes "I'm asking for license, registration and insurance" and I said "And I'm saying no" to which the MP said "I know you work on the base" and I go "that's awesome" to which the MP said "I am this close to arresting you" I stick my hand out the window and say "I wish you would" To be arrested...by an MP...off base...over an illegal uturn would have made this story so much more epic. At this point his partner gets out, and his partner is talking some sense...his partner was a KATUSA and the partner basically took the approach of "You know your really fucking shit up right" to which the MP said to his partner "I'm going arrest him" to which his partner said "That would be bad" and not bad for me...but bad for the MP. Finally the partner gets the hot headed MP back to their car...and I guess they made a deal. He'll write me a ticket, and off I go. I countered that I wanted the KATUSA to write the street name and location of where the ticket is being written. They asked for my license and registration. I told them they can write down my plate number and find me that way (I know MPS can do that) So he writes me the ticket, and I tell him when I get back from my vacation I'm going have his 1SGT create a new asshole for him to have a choice of which asshole to take a shit out of. So he wrote my the ticket, he wrote my name as "John Doe" cause I refused to give him my name, and license plate, they put a note of where the ticket was written, which was a street about 5KM away from the base. Well this was a long weekend, and I was going come back to the base on Tuesday. That Monday afternoon I get a call I answer "Hello RedditAdmin is dumb, I'm the commander of the MPs at base XYZ" I go "Ah yes, how are you" to which the commander said "Well I could be better, this morning I learned that one of my MPs gave you a traffic ticket for an illegal u-turn off base" I go "yea I was planning to come talk to you about that" he goes "I'd love to have a sit down with you. But I just want you to know that ticket means nothing and the MP won't be on road patrol anymore" I go "SO you explained to him that he royally screwed up?" the commander says "Yes we are taking disciplinary actions" I go "Great I'd still like to talk to you and make sure this doesn't happen again to someone else...cause this could have gone badly" he goes "Yes I understand" And we schedule a time. My wife is like "Who was the that?" I go "The commander of the MPs" she goes "See I told you, that you were going get in trouble" and I laughed and said "O i'm not the one in trouble" The MP that pulled me over was a PFC...I saw him in the foodcourt a few months later...he was what I like to call a "fuzzy". The meeting with the MP commander went well, he said he was going have training with all his MPs on their authority and the regulations and rules and so forth....which also includes not pulling people over for traffic violations off base.

Got a ticket going 81 in a 60 (US-27) ticket clinic advice?
Cop pulled me over, got me on his radar, suggested I call a lawyer, recommended ticket clinic, or fight it in court. But to never straight up pay it. Pulled over by Davie police. Nice guy though. He got me. I called the ticket clinic, paid 99$ and forwarded them my citation. They said to not worry about the 30 days to make a payment and to check back in with them. My friend said she did the same and found out her license was suspended for not paying her ticket after talking with them which makes me paranoid. Is there anything else I should be doing? I’m just nervous about the same happening to me. My main concern is points on my license. Thanks!

I’m in the US and am terrified of cops. I for some reason struggle finding BLM land and am always worried I’ll be ticketed
Does anyone else feel this way? I have done van life countless times in between moves from state to state. But now- I’m planning on doing it full time (not just a month or two). I struggle greatly to find free space to sleep. I always encounter “no overnight camping” signs and other of that sorts. So much so, I’m considering just parking anyways and risking dealing w cops. Anyone else? It seems everywhere I go is private property. (I was in UT, currently in Mt, headed to CA) I see so many pictures of people parked in wilderness- however I find myself more often than not at rest stops at Walmarts. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I hit the road in two weeks. Edit: the support I’ve received in this thread is invaluable!
