Whenever an unrealized gain or loss account is used in my textbook for an example, why does it specify both gain OR loss? It makes it hard to understand what exactly is happening in with the accounts because I’m not sure if there is a gain or there is a loss, for example A company has bonds outstanding of 100k. At the end of the current year the company’s credit risk has increased and therefor the fair value of the debt is 95k. In preparing the journal entry, the book states (under IFRS) Dr. Bonds payable. 5000 Cr. Unrealized gain or loss. 5000 Like, is it a gain? Is it a loss? Why does the book always have to say both. There must be a concept I’m missing. Any thoughts?
I feel like the Unrealized loss/gain calculation on IBKR is really messed up. I had noticed several strange things there, for example, after spinoffs, I saw huge losses on a ticker that had barely moved. I am also noticing that when I own a company that has gone down in price, average down, and then sell some shares, it completely messes up IBKR's unrealized calculation. Example: Owned BABA averaging around 120/share. BABA came down to 60/share. I am 50% down. Doubled down at around $60. Then sold only the recently added position at $66 to get a 10% quick profit. Now my unrealized loss/gain on BABA is showing as 12% positive. So IBKR is calculating as though my only shares are the ones I bought at $60/share. No freaking way! It should still show at 30-40% down. What is the deal with this?
Petition to the community: All “gain” posts should be banned, especially unrealized gains.
I understand people get excited to see the number attached to their portfolio go up, and I can appreciate the increased heart rate that comes along with it. Last June was something we’ll never forget and hope to relive in the coming weeks. It’s hard not to have your tits destroy the shirt you’re wearing but $73, $730, $73,000 or even $730,000 a share is not the fucking goal. Practicing zen and focusing in on the required mental fortitude for what’s to come is paramount. I move to have all “gain” posts, especially those that are unrealized portfolio value increases, removed. Agree or disagree, it’s your choice, just don’t fucking dance.
Last week's H8 Data from the Fed. All banks' unrealized gains dropped by $9.5B. Big banks accounting ~$7.5B of this on all securities. Big banks MBS & Treasury drop of $4.8B - meaning $2.7B was on other securities (including equities).
We are adding the historical balances of one of our new subsidiaries. We have unrealized forex gains/losses as of our cutoff date. What's the best way to handle this, so that next month, we can run the currency revaluation in NS properly taking into consideration those unrealized forex gains/losses?
H8 Data update. Largest unrealized drop in value of unrealized gains since mid Oct-2020! Net unrealized gains drop another $14.4B to -$39.1B position. Big banks account for $11.4B drop. Treasury securities drop $8.1B to -$26.3B position, where big banks account for $5.6B drop to -$14.6B position.
Is it necessary to follow a particular strategy(or make one) in forex trading? Cant we just make some good gains with support resistances, Chart patterns, Candlestick patterns and fundamentals?
Question: Post splividend, how much will the ticker have to increase in order for DFV to have an unrealized gain of One Million Dollars? (Based on his Final Update)
H8 Data Update. Another $10.3B drop in unrealized gains across all banks, with current position of -$49.4B. Big Banks lost $9.4B in uncrealized gains to end up in -$36.5B position. MBS/Treasury securities only accounted for -$4.4B reduction, which means $5B drop was for non-MBS/Treasury securities.
I recently started forex trading i grew my account from £500 to £10,000 in just less than a month i was so happy and i got carried away then i put too high lot size on gold and lost my full balance :( Has this happened to anyone else ?
So here’s the scenario. Let’s say you’re in a trade that you’re green on, but it hasn’t hit your profit target yet. Your mind is telling you to get out of the trade to take the little bit of profit you have, while the chart is telling you not to yet. What are some ways you can minimize that fear of losing money and allow yourself to stay in that trade?
Please someone explain how much I can regulate how much I lose or gain in a Forex trade (tradingview)
I started Forex trading very recently and I'm trying very hard to absorb all the knowledge I gain, but when it comes to setting up the trade itself, I encounter a little misunderstanding. When opening the order menu, there's the section where it says EUR, and I suppose that how much I'd gain if the trade were to be successful, and on the stop loss side, how much I'd lose if stop loss were to be triggered. However, at the very bottom, where it says "trade value", the value displayed is tens of times greater that any of the prior values. In my case, I'm making an order with 200 units just to test the grounds, and below take profit it says 0.09 EUR, and 0.02 EUR. At the bottom it says they the trade value is 6.46 EUR. Can someone explain what "trade value" means and does it have any effect or correlation to how much money I'd make off of a trade?
Confused about "Closed Positions + Unrealized Loss/Gain" versus "Performance tab"
I often look at my portfolio performance by looking at closed positions of each previous year, leading up to the current year and also look at the closed positions of the current year plus any unrealized losses and gains. When I add up these numbers, they differ significantly from the Performance tab over the same time period. I was under the impression the performance tab for a given time is basically closed positions + unrealized gains / losses added up and then quantized over whatever time interval we have. Is my understanding incorrect?
I don't want to go political at all, but wondering if any of you are worried that if we set a precedent with taxing unrealized gain, that the thresholds will come down from billionaires over time to encompass more people whenever more funds are needed? It happened with AMT. That would potentially upend the buy-and-hold philosophy for a lot more people than just billionaires. I wonder what will replace "buy and hold" as a path to wealth creation if that happens?
