Has anyone else been having endless issues with FNB recently
I feel like ever since FNB updated the look and feel of their app, things have just been falling apart. Half the app's features are currently broken or just don't output any actual result. For instance, I filed an insurance claim via the app, and the whole process completes but the claim is never actually filed – and there is no way to know that apart from calling them. Apart from that a whole set of features of the app are just not available via online banking, such as "nav >> life", "nav >> car" etc. So there is no mechanism to renew my car license apart from via the app – but all the documents required are on my PC and not on my phone (as is the case for most people). Secure chat no longer refreshes and needs to be manually refreshed. Additionally, I went to transfer forex today from my forex account to my ZAR account only to find that, even though I selected the base currency as "ZAR" the online banking system simply ignored that and treated it as USD anyway. Meaning instead of transferring X ZAR it was about to transfer X USD. Luckily I noticed this before accepting the transaction. I really can't understand what the FNB software team are doing, surely all the functionality should be preserved when reskinning the website and app (it isn't like the changes they made are huge in terms of layout and code). Furthermore, it makes no sense in 2022 why the online version and the app would have different feature sets – even less so that the website would have fewer features. Even more worrying is that all these issues made it to production – is there no test-driven development at FNB? It really surprises me when companies can't get it right, especially with so many talented local devs available. Am I alone on this, or have other people had similar issues?

I've recently tried to compile a list of ways for South Africans to fund a Wise account using ZAR from SA (for ref, here), and would be keen for some insight/feedback on whether they work and which are the best. Edit, for clarification: "funding a Wise account using ZAR" means exchanging ZAR to USD/GBP/etc (currencies Wise can accept) and then sending it onwards to Wise. I did find some old threads here regarding funding an IBKR account, which had some info on using local FX brokers, FNB and Shyft, but beyond that, my actual experience of doing this is pretty spotty. I'm particularly curious about whether anyone has tried the third option -- funding it via a credit/debit card?
The first is by using the Shyft app to transfer ZAR to Wise. It provides one of the better FX fee structures when converting from ZAR to a stronger currency. Shyft does some of what Wise does, but its FX fees are considerably more, and it's just... frustrating to use. The app is nowhere as well made, or functional, as Wise (whether on the Android/iPhone app or web version). The second is to open a local (SA) foreign currency account (e.g. with FNB, or Discovery Bank), buy the relevant foreign currency, and then send it offshore to your Wise account (using the currency-specific details). The third -- which I haven't tried personally -- would be to fund your Wise account once you've opened it by using a ZAR credit/debit card. This would trigger all manner of FX fees dependent on your bank and account type, so be sure that you know what to expect first! Finally, you could use a foreign currency broker from South Africa, like Exchange4Free (who Wise uses as their agent for transfers into South Africa). Again, I haven't tried this and can't speak to the FX fees, but this might be an option to look up.
Question if I may, for Etoro users. Deposit / Withdrawal fees / conversions. Anyone had experience here & what are the charges? It seems one deposits on a card in USD, but what about withdrawal into Rands? Thanks

Hey everyone, I'm sure we have a lot of people on this sub that receive money for work done overseas. I basically have two (maybe three?) questions regarding this practice. I've started writing technical articles on the side and I get paid about $300 per article. I do this in my spare time. I still have my main day job. I've figured out some of the tax stuff, so that part is figured out. Long story short, first payment has arrived in my FNB account under the "Forex->Global Receipts" menu item, but when I choose to receive the money in an account, I need to specify a BoP code (Balance of Payments code) for the payment.
So, what BoP code do I use? Code 303 seems close (Compensation paid by a non-resident to a resident employee temporarily abroad), but I'm not temporarily abroad, so...
I'm putting away 50% of this income for tax purposes, but I'm straight up thinking of putting the other 50% in a Tax Free Savings Account. Does that sound like a plan? Or does anyone else have any other ideas?

Exchange ZAR to GBP without creating unnecessary tax implications

Trying to transfer Rands to GBP Considered currencyfair but they actually move the Zar to UK meaning there's exchange control implications: has to be for travel, gift (tax implications), or tuition. None of which apply. Wise doesn't do Zar. Can do through my bank, FNB, but can't get clarity on the spread they're making on the rate Sable opens an investec Forex accnt in SA, makes the transfer, exchanges into GBP then sends to UK. 1% "margin on rate" which in plain English is just 1 % take NOT Inclined to exchange to crypto then to GBP Amount is one transfer each for me and hubby at below the SDA Any suggestions of better deals, less complicated arrangements on this - please let me know 🙂 thank you
Just got off the phone with the Teal colour bank, and apparently, I am not KYC compliant anymore. That, I learned, is part of a 5 yearly FICA re-evaluation to prevent money laundering. They will close my FNB account unless I provide them with all kinds of documentation, including but not limited to proof of origin of the funds that I use for my PayPal account. I think they are talking about the $1.99 p/m for my NYT crossword puzzle subscription. Quite absurd really, considering current events around possible money laundering, forex transgressions, extra-judicial shenanigans and well-cushioned furniture etc. The question I hope someone can shed light on is, do I actually need to link my PayPal account to FNB? I've had it long before FNB came onto the scene, and I use the credit card from the bank where I have all my accounts (which are not with FNB) to fund the PayPal account.

I'm currently with Nedbank and comparing them to for example FNB the forex rates seems to be consistently a couple % better with FNB which is starting to get really interesting to look at seeing how much value Nedbank is leeching. Has anyone done this recently? I'm thinking of opening a forex account, specifically the FNB Global One Account, to buy cryptocurrency on Binance (I want access to coins that aren't on any SA exchanges yet). Is there any way to do this without having to travel overseas and open an account directly in a bank?
I’m planning on moving to the UK post-pandemic and want to take advantage of the strong Rand right now. I only want to move a small amount (R10-15k) right now which is below most banks’ minimums for opening a foreign currency account. I’ll put in more over the next few months but may lose out on the good rates. Ideally, I'd want to purchase some GBP right now and move it straight into a UK-domiciled account, but I can’t open a UK account right now. My options are to open a zero-minimum account like FNB Global, which means I will have to first open an FNB account, which I’m not too keen on. I guess this is the most straight forward option but I hate FNB’s interface and the bank/service in general. Tried Standard Bank Shyft and all I got was error messages. My other more creative option is to put more money into my Easy Equities USD account regularly and buy some conservative funds for now. On arrival in the UK, I’ll have the USD paid out to and converted to GBP with Revolut. This option is good because the USD/GBP rate is a bit more stable than the ZAGBP rate, and I may be able to benefit from some growth in the investments. Ideally I’d love for EE to open a Sterling account but for now this might be my best option. The downsides are tax, market risk, and the potential for GBP to grow stronger against the Dollar, which might leave me worse off. Do I play it safe and open the FNB accounts now to take advantage of the Rand, or keep it in USD and gain some growth with investments? Concerns: no idea when I’ll be able to move so uncertain timeline but hoping for the end of year; I hate admin and prefer not to deal with bank staff; forex fluctuations; market fluctuations
