MT5 vs. QuantConnect for Forex
Hello quantitative traders, what are your opinions and experiences with
MT5 vs. QuantConnect both for backtesting and live trading automated Forex strategies?
Some background on me and my question:
- I am ~ 6 months into my trading journey, researching and backtesting. Currently forward testing a few promising Forex strategies and preparing for a go-live date later this year (presuming forward test results continue to hold).
- I have paper traded Forex with both IB and OANDA, currently planning to live trade with OANDA for Forex, but am also finding good backtesting results for my primary trend following strategy on commodities (metals, oil, etc.), and as a US resident cannot trade CFDs so I am realizing I may ultimately need a broker that supports both Futures and Forex if/when I expand my trading beyond Forex.
- Have built a web app that can pull price data and place trades directly with both OANDA's API and IB's API, but infrastructure maintenance is something I would prefer to avoid, so looking for a good platform that can support both backtesting and live trading and is broker-agnostic (or at least integrates with enough brokers to provide good diversity of tradable securities).
- I taught myself Pinescript to backtest in TradingView and automated a few strategies with webhooks to place trades in both IB and OANDA using my web app, but trailing stop losses and some other dynamic logic wasn't easily automated, so have concluded that committing all-in to an integrated platform is needed.
- I have a background in data science and my programming language of choice is Python, so mild preference for QuantConnect but am not averse to learning MQL5 if it's the better platform and right long-term solution.

Forex Algos with Quantconnect/Oanda
Hey guys,
This is really just an FYI to anyone who trades Forex with algos. Oanda, Quantconnect, and Tradingview are all very closely integrated, and I've had a really good experience with setting up the algo and having it run on an Oanda practice account. So easy to set up, and everything just works nicely. Not a shill for any of these services, just really had a good experience and wanted to share. Let me know with questions!

QC and Backtrader give very different results
Hi,
I was trying to backtest a forex strategy, switched from backtrader to quantconnect because of the live trading integration and when I tried to rewrite everything I discovered that the result is very different.
When backtrader gives a 16% gain for 3 years, qc gives 2% for 3 years, no fees were included in the calculation, I still need to try to optimize the strategy.
Obviously the data is different, the one provided from QC is way more accurate.
So, what result should I trust? What is the move in this situation?

Online strategies as a starting point
I've been reading a lot about forex over the last couple of months and started looking into algo trading, in particular using Quantconnect. Since I've not live traded myself for long I've not developed any strategies of my own or at the very least my own trading style. I was curious how viable these strategies that you find on youtube etc. are as a starting point/base for algo trading. I'm referring to things like MACD Crossover, mean reversion using BB, and Rob Hoffman's famous strategy to name a few. I'm well aware that the people who are actually successfully doing this don't spend their time making videos and actually trade, but would I be wrong in assuming this is a good starting place and working from there?
